Every month, hundreds of new gun owners in the Portland area take their first step toward safe, legal concealed carry — and this guide provided to you from PDX Arsenal will walk you through everything you need to know.
Who Can Get an Oregon CHL?
To qualify for a Concealed Handgun License in Oregon, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien
- Live in Oregon, or a bordering state (and already have your home state’s concealed license)
- Complete an approved firearms safety course like the one we offer
- Schedule a appointment with your county sheriff station to pass a criminal background check
- Have no felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or outstanding warrants
What the CHL Class Includes:
Our Oregon CHL class is designed for beginners, but entertaining for all — no shooting is required.
You’ll learn:
- Oregon’s laws on self-defense and concealed carry
- How to safely store and transport your firearm
- When and where you can legally carry
- What to do if you’re stopped by law enforcement
At the end of the class, you’ll receive a NRA recognized certificate of completion that qualifies you to apply for your Oregon CHL.
What Happens After the Class?
After your class, you’ll schedule an appointment with the sheriff’s office in your county (Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, etc.) to:
- Submit your application
- Provide fingerprints, complete background check, and submit your ID photo at your sheriff station appointment
- Pay the state licensing fee ($115.00)
Your license is typically issued within 4 to 6 weeks. For further guidance, please refer to the full class presentation we provided, which includes a resource slide near the end to help simplify the process.
Should I Get the Multi-State CCW License?
If you ever travel outside Oregon, we highly recommend our Multi-State CCW course, which gives you legal concealed carry in up to 38 states, including:
- Washington
- Idaho
- Nevada
- Utah
You are welcome to attend any concealed carry class listed on our website calendar. Choose from Oregon, Utah, or Multi-State certification options—all available in a single class session.
